Things you can do to defend the Whittier Narrows Natural Area:
The proponents of the Discovery Center Development are spending over $300,000 to “neutralize” opposition to the over thirty million dollar initial project. If the Discovery Center is such a sound development why does it, after seven years of apparent planning, need to hire a public relations firm for $188,000?
Why is there so much pressure to line up organizations and local governments to support the project while the draft Environmental Impact Report has yet to be released? The mega project has yet to answer hard questions from the Significant Ecological Area Technical Advisory Committee of LA County Regional Planning.
• Please write your local city council, state assembly member, and state senator. Ask questions. Let them know your opinion.
• Why is Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina promising $3 million for this environmentally damaging project while county clinics and other services are under threat of cutback or closing? Please ask her. Write and call supervisor Molina at 3400 Aerojet Avenue, Suite 240 El Monte, CA 91731 Phone: (626) 350-4500, Fax: (626) 448-1573 .
• We invite you to participate in the weekly work meetings of the Friends of the Whittier Narrows Natural Area. The meetings are Sundays at 1:00 PM in the picnic area of the Whittier Narrows Nature Center, 1000 N. Durfee Avenue, South El Monte, across from South El Monte High School.
• Financial support is needed to defend this remaining natural area on the San Gabriel River. Please send donations to the Friends of the Whittier Narrows Natural Area, P.O. Box 3522, South El Monte, CA 91733-0522

The proposed Discovery Center parking lot would replace an area where hawks forage with a 150 space parking lot and out-buildings.
